Ah, Mondays … Who doesn’t love a bright and cheerful Monday morning?  Okay, besides everyone.
Tom Wilson, an American actor, writer and comedian said of this cherished icon of our weekly calendar, “Mondays are the potholes in the road of life.”  But, the good news is that they don’t always have to be the most dreaded day of your hectic workweek.
On Monday, the Friends of the Beaufort County Library began their 23rd year of the “Books Sandwiched In” book review series with a spirited discussion of “The Good Earth,” a book by Pearl S. Buck, reviewed by Rev. Ashley Rogillio.  If your literary appetite consists of more than the Sunday sports page (not that there’s anything wrong with that), then “Books Sandwiched In” may just be the cure to your Monday blues.
Over the course of the next six Mondays, esteemed and respected members of the Lowcountry community will offer book reviews on many important fiction and non-fiction books including “The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt’s Darkest Journey,” by Candace Millard; “Imagining Don Giovanni: A Novel” by Anthony Rudel and “Flags of our Fathers: Heroes of Iwo Jima,” by James Bradley with Ron Powers, to name just a few.
The book reviews are free and open to the public and will continue January 12 through February 23 at the Sea Island Presbyterian Church on Lady’s Island from 1:00 until 2 p.m.  Refreshments are provided free of charge at 12:30, however donations are welcome, and this is yet another way for you or the readers in your home to mingle with other literary minds in Beaufort County while helping Mondays pass a little quicker.
English philosopher John Locke perhaps said it best when he said, “Reading furnishes the mind only with materials of knowledge; it is thinking that makes what we read ours.”  Or, as Groucho Marx so eloquently said, “Outside of a dog, a book is a man’s best friend.  Inside of a dog, it’s too dark to read.”
