Marine Corps Community Services’ Semper Fit Health Promotion Program held the 2013 Submarine Run aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot, June 26.

The run included a two-mile run ending with a 250 meter swim at the depot’s pool.

“Having events like these give people a chance to have fun exercising while also adding a sense of competition to the equation,” said Kathy Williams, MCCS health promotions coordinator.

Participation in the Submarine Run was open to all retired and active duty members, dependents and Department of Defense employees.

The Semper Fit Program aboard Fightertown and MCRD Parris Island provides Marines and families with fitness classes, special events, personal trainers and various resources to live active healthy lives.

“A lot of people faced a test of endurance today because most people stick to running rather than incorporating swimming into their workout routine,” said Sgt. Anthony Sanchez, Headquarters and Support Battalion logistics chief and native of Homestead, Fla. “It’s a good experience because you can learn something new about yourself while testing your level of fitness.”

Medals were awarded to the top participants who completed the race including one honorable mention.

Throughout summer MCCS offers various aquatic fitness programs such as

Cardio H2O+, Aqua Fit, Aqua Zumba and Deep Water Jogging.

The Semper Fit’s next major event will be this year’s second swim meet on July 17. Swim meets consist of various swimming competitions with awards and prizes.

“People get tired of doing the same thing all the time and our goal is to give everyone the opportunity to try something different,” said Williams, a native of Princeton, W.VA
