Marine Corps Community Services held their 2nd Quarterly Road Race aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, May 22.

The road race is mainly held on Parris Island every quarter taking participants four miles through the depot.

Part of the Semper Fit program, the Quarterly Road Race is just one of many events held by the program whose mission is to provide Marines and their families with resources to lead active healthy lives.

"Events like these allow people to break away from the same routine of preparing for the [Personal Fitness Test] while also having fun," said Chuck Culpepper, Air Station athletic director.

Enrollment into MCCS Semper Fit programs is open to all active duty members and their families, retirees and Department of Defense employees.

MCCS has been hosting Quarterly Road Races for over 14 years in support of service members and civilians aboard the Air Station and Parris Island.

"It’s important to be involved in events like these because it helps you become combat ready and physically fit," said Sgt. Erik Shepard, 2nd Battalion Gulf Company drill instructor and native of Amarillo, Texas.

MCCS also offers a Run Club Challenge through their Semper fit program, which is an on-going event where participants log their runs to reach goals such as 250 miles within 60 days, 500 miles within 180 days and 1,000 miles within 365 days. Prizes are given upon competition of each goal.

"Semper Fit programs are apart of that resiliency of warriors, which can also improve morale, cohesion and achieve the units’ mission," said Culpepper, a native of Mobile, Ala.

The next Quarterly Road Race will be 5 miles and is slated to occur on Sept. 25 aboard MCRD Parris Island. For more information about the Quarterly Road Race or other Semper Fit programs contact the MCRD Parris Island fitness center at 228-1579 or MCAS Beaufort fitness center at 228-7192.
