Despite it being six years after the death of Sgt. Joshua Ashley, his mother, Tammie Ashley, while surrounded by friends and family, stood face to face with her son’s friend and mentor Gunnery Sgt. Justin Boyer’s for his promotion aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island July 2. This was the second time Tammie had promoted Boyer since the passing of her son.

Marines make landing at DragonBoat Beaufort 2018 - The Single Marine Program rowing team competes during the 6th annual DragonBoat Beaufort charity race June 23 at Waterfront Park in downtown Beaufort. The team was comprised of Marines and Sailors from the Tri-command. This was the second year SMP put together a team for the event. Both local and traveling teams competed in the volunteer organized event that strives to create a strong sense of wellness through competition, camaraderie and also raises money for local cancer patients, survivors, and families. The SMP team received the fastest local time for the second year in a row.

The community of Beaufort came together to compete in the 6th annual DragonBoat Beaufort charity race June 23 at Waterfront Park in downtown Beaufort. Marines, Sailors, friends, and families from Marine Corps Air Beaufort, Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, and Naval Hospital Beaufort competed in and volunteered at the event.

The U.S. Air Force’s 157th Fighter Squadron, 169th Fighter Wing conducted air-to-ground training at Townsend Bombing Range, Georgia. June 12. Pilots with the 157th, also known as the Swamp Foxes, practiced bombing and strafing runs using inert, or non-exploding, munitions.

Hunter Cauthron places a screen over the engine intake of an F/A-18 Hornet aboard Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort June 6. The screen over the engine intake is used when Marines who are not pilots start the aircraft’s engines to conduct pre-flight checks. It ensures foreign object debris does not enter the engine. Cauthron is an engine mechanic and plane captain with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 312.

VMFA-312 Maintainers sustain mission readiness

The plane captain stands at attention, saluting the pilot one last time. After hours of preparation and meticulous pre-flight checks Lance Cpl. Hunter Cauthron confidently clears the pilot for flight. Cauthron and his fellow maintenance Marines run back into the hangar as the F/A-18C Hornet aircraft taxis onto the runway.
