File taxes for free

15 Jan 2010 | Lance Cpl. Courtney C. White Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort

Military taxpayers may file their 2009 income taxes free of charge at the Air Station Tax Center from Jan. 20 through April 15.

The Tax Center will prepare returns through the end of tax season for interested military personnel and their families.

“Taxpayers who choose to file at the Tax Center can save an average of $300 on tax preparation fees that they would normally pay at other businesses,” said Staff Sgt. Melinda Goodman, the staff noncommissioned officer-in-charge at the Air Station Tax Center.

When coming to the Tax Center to file taxes, customers need to bring social security cards, W-2’s, common access cards and education forms for everyone being filed. If the customer has a savings account, they need to get the interest form from their bank to avoid additional charges.

The Marines who prepare the taxes have attended and are certified through the same training course H&R Block personnel receive. Consequently, the Tax Center offers the same service as those out in town, clarified Goodman.

“The Tax Center offers the same great service this year as years past,” Goodman explained.

The Tax Center will be open for walk-ins from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Those who are not able to come during the week can come Saturday, by appointment only.

For more information or to schedule an appointment, call the Tax Center at 228-7047.
