Marine Corps Community Services Clinical Counseling Services Substance Abuse Counseling aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehab-ilitation Facilities for a period of three years for its outpatient treatment and the prevention and diversion program for alcohol and other drugs and addictions. The service is available to all Tri-Command personnel.

According to Brian Boon, the president and CEO of CARF, the accreditation will extend through December 2012. The achievement is an indication of Parris Island’s Substance Abuse Counseling’s dedication and commitment to improving their quality of services. It was clearly indicated to CARF that the counselors had established a pattern of practice excellence.

“With this accreditation, we can say we are as, if not more, qualified as other program in society. We want family members and service members to know they can receive the same treatment on base for free rather than going off base,” said Jose Lugo, the clinical supervisor and the program manager of Substance Abuse Program.

According to the CARF Web site, it serves as a catalyst for improving the quality of life of the persons served by CARF-accredited organizations and services provided.

The Substance Abuse Counseling program will continue to implement the same values and concepts toward future sessions and substance abuse policies, such as the new Controlled Substances Act, a part of the Uniform Code of Military Justice and Marine Corps Order 5355.1. The order states other different substances that are prohibited within the Navy and Marine Corps and are punishable under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

“These drugs have an attempt to affect service members’ health, welfare and performance, so the order was established to enforce the ‘zero-tolerance policy’ the military has,” Lugo said.
