MCAS Beaufort S.C. -- From bowling alleys, theatres and recreational centers, the Tri-Command area offers many leisure activities for service members and their families at affordable prices.
The Single Marine and Sailor Program offers Tri-Command service members exciting social events and trips for troop enjoyment. To qualify, individuals must be a single parent, a geographical bachelor or not married.
“The program is a great way for service members to express their ideas with others while enjoying themselves during trips, volunteering opportunities and recreational activities,” said Benjie Pangelinan, SMP assistant manager and native of Yigo, Guam.
Various perks are given through Marine Corps Com¬munity Services to the SMP, including unlimited golf at The Legends aboard Parris Island any day after 1 p.m. for $20. This price includes both cart and green fee. Single Marines and sailors are also qualified for free bowling at the Tri-Command bowling centers Wednesdays from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Fridays from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., and all day on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., except during special events.
Marine Corps Community Services also offers free movie viewings at base theatres aboard Fightertown and Parris Island from Thursday through Sunday.
“The benefits of the program support camaraderie by allowing service members to have access to discounted leisure activities, which does not involve staying in a barracks room,” said Lance Cpl. Michael Hoffman, Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 312 ejection seat mechanic and native of Conway, N.H.
The SMP also provides its service members with trips to various places such as the Rodney Carrington Comedy Show in the Savannah Civic Center, Feb. 18 and a Daytona 500 International Speedway Trip at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla., Feb. 26.
“Getting together and spending time out of the barracks is a great way to get your mind off of being away from home and build new relationships with others,” said Cpl. David Gauthier, Marine Wing Support Squadron 273 data and network specialist and native of Culpeper, Va.
Many events are also held at Afterburners, the Air Station’s recreational center and at the Brig and Brew, Parris Island’s recreational center. For more information about the SMP, visit www.mccs-sc.com/smp or contact Benjie Pangelinan at 228-7405.
