Starting school through technology

New online school registration is saving schools and parents time, money and resources in Beaufort County Schools. Service members can benefit as well with a Department of Defense web-based pre-registration system for enrollment into DoD schools and non-DoD schools online.
The Department of Defense Education Activity website was created to help families with children attending military schools. Parents who use the online pre-registration are able to begin the registration process early by completing paperwork such as emergency contact information, medical information, school services and more.
One benefit of using pre-registration is that it assists parents of first time students by getting a majority of paperwork completed online.
The DoDEA website also allows parents to register their children into non-DoD schools as part of their non-DoD Schools Program.
“From the school’s perspective, we’re drastically reducing the amount of paperwork and clerical work associated with registration each August,” said Jeff Moss, Beaufort County School District superintendent.
Online registrations for Laurel Bay schools began in 2011, allowing parents to begin the registration process.
“Through the DoDEA’s website, parents will be able to obtain the required documents needed to gain eligibility,” said Stuart Wheeless, Laurel Bay schools administration officer. “The online registration does not register a child directly, but it does provide documents parents can bring to schools during the registration process.”
Parents can also print out various forums found on the DoDEA website for returning students. Online pre-registration is only available to children attending school for the first time.
Schools found aboard Laurel Bay include Elliott Elementary, Galer Elementary and Bolden Elementary.
